# MEDCIN Clinical Terminology

Medicomp's MEDCIN® clinical terminology is a structured vocabulary of nearly 450,000 clinical concepts spanning all domains of medicine, expert curated and knowledge engineered for over 45 years. It's the terminology layer at the core of the Quippe platform, providing a common, clinically accurate vocabulary to work from.

## Built the Way Clinicians Think

MEDCIN concepts are organized the way clinicians think and document, providing rich, reliable data for everything in medicine:
- Symptoms
- History
- Physical Exam
- Tests, Lab Orders, and Results
- Diagnoses, Syndromes, and Conditions
- Medications and Therapy

Unstructured narrative becomes discrete, computable data that retains clinical context, rather than being forced into a billing- or claims-first shape. Concepts support a navigational hierarchy across up to ten levels of granularity, and robust synonymy means searches and mappings hold up against real-world language clinicians and patients actually use.

## A Universal Translator Across Standards

MEDCIN includes over 10 million bi-directional mappings to globally adopted standards and terminologies, including (though not limited to):

- CCC
- CPT®
- CDT®
- DSM-5®
- HCPCS
- ICD-10-CM
- ICD-10-PCS
- ICD-WHO
- LOINC®
- RxNorm®
- SNOMED CT®

Rather than requiring direct crosswalks between every pair of standards, each terminology maps to MEDCIN once, and MEDCIN provides the coding crosswalks. MEDCIN acts as the shared reference point that lets data move between any two connected standards. A diagnosis or procedure captured in a clinician's own words can be coded once and made available in SNOMED CT, ICD-10, and CPT, all from the same underlying MEDCIN concept. Extensive SNOMED CT support includes hierarchy navigation, subsumption testing, and automatic generation of post-coordinated expressions.

Custom codes or outdated mappings? MEDCIN provides a path for clinical data validation and normalization, to solve for local codes, bad or out of date mappings, duplicate items, and inconsistent medical coding.

## Beyond Terminology

The same structured MEDCIN data can drive evaluation and management (E&M) coding, clinical quality measure compliance, and risk adjustment calculations for Medicare Advantage HCCs, in addition to supporting the interoperability standards necessary for data exchange and usability.

## Continuously Maintained

MEDCIN reflects 45+ years of clinical knowledge engineering, developed with physicians from leading medical centers and updated continuously to keep pace with evolving guidelines and standards. MEDCIN concepts have been part of the UMLS Metathesaurus since 2008 and are updated quarterly.
